Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Clump–forming, erect perennial herbs up to 50 cm tall.

Stems: Stems somewhat woody, pubescent, the hairs appressed and some spreading.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound. Alternate. Leaflets 5–9 narrowly elliptic to elliptic–oblanceolate, apiculate, 1.3–7 cm long, 0.4–1.5 cm wide. Upper surfaces glabrous or pubescent; lower surfaces appressed pubescent with long hairs. Leaflet margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules adnate to base of petiole.

Flowers: Flowers ca. 15 mm long, in racemes up to 30 cm long. Flowers papilionaceous; pedicels ca. 6 mm long. Calyx bilabiate, 6.5 mm long, both lips subentire. Corolla lilac with white and yellow markings, standard short–clawed, keel beaked, the keel white with an indigo tip. Stamens 10, connate into a tube; anthers alternately long and short. Ovary superior, sessile.

Fruit: Pods linear–oblong; slightly falcate; 6–8 cm long; 0.8–1.2 cm wide; obliquely grooved between the seeds. Seeds ca. 10; ellipsoid; slightly laterally compressed; 7–10 mm long; 5–7 mm wide; brown pubescent; hilum small and sunken.
